Australia (Pull Ahead Books - Continents Series) FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Cara Mulcahy
Complete with maps, an index, a glossary and a page of "Cool Facts about Australia," this member of the "Pull Ahead Book" series is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the continent of Australia. A perfect size for small hands, this photo filled book is packed with information about the continent's geographical regions, oceans, wildlife, vegetation and cities. Readers are first shown where on the globe Australia is located and that it is the smallest of the world's seven continents. The journey through Australia then begins. First stop, the oceans and the Great Barrier Reef. Next, readers are whisked away to the highlands where many Australians ski during the winter months. The tour continues on to the middle of the continent where wheat is grown. Then it is on to the western region of Australia, much of which is covered by deserts. It is here that one has to watch out for the desert death adder. One can also see herds of cows and sheep in the grasslands of Western Australia. While traveling through Australia readers have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Outback and Ayers Rock, kangaroos, platypuses, and the Acacia tree. Finally, readers learn that most Australians live in cities such as Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. A great resource in any classroom, this book could be used for whole class lessons or for independent reading. Websites and other resources about Australia are listed in the back. 2004, Lerner Publications Company, Ages 4 to 8.
