FROM THE CRITICS

School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-These handsome new editions have been substantially updated to reflect the events of the post-9/11 world. Even basic information on geography, history and government, people, and the economy has been reworked and made more readable. The new "Cultural Life" chapter includes information on holidays and festivals, literature and music, sports and recreation, and the arts, as well as an easily prepared traditional recipe. Appendixes, again a new addition, cover fast facts, currency, the flag, the national anthem, brief sketches of famous people and sights, and a glossary. The attractive format features clear maps, informative sidebars, and all-new photos, in full color except for archival reproductions. A few geographical errors, however, have crept in: in Afghanistan, Kabul is east, not west, of the Koh-i-Baba Mountains; and Pakistan initially mixes up the directions for the Indus River Valley and the Baluchistan Plateau, although the maps and a later mention in the text are correct. Punjab is hardly "the biggest- province in the country," that honor falling to Baluchistan. Pencil in the corrections, for these titles still deserve a place in even basic collections.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
