FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Leila Toledo
Sudan, the largest country in Africa, is bigger than Texas and Alaska combined. There is an informal division between the North and South. The North is primarily Islamic, whereas the South is primarily Christian. This fueled civil war following independence from Great Britain and Egypt in 1956. We are introduced to the land, the people, the economy and the major players in the conflict. The early history of Sudan which was linked to Egypt's is related, and traced to the current conflict. This book presents readers with an opportunity to understand the history and dynamics of conflicts existing in current times with the hope that this understanding will lead to a resolution of conflict. Although there have been many attempts to solve the problem that face Sudan, by the end of 1998 conditions have not improved, they have gotten worse. Part of "The World in Conflict" series.
