FROM THE CRITICS
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Jensen covers the fundamentals of baseball, including baserunning, throwing, hitting, and fielding. There are also chapters on equipment and the history of the game. The author writes in an easy-to-understand, no-nonsense style, and the integration of text and photographs is excellent. Many clear, full-color photos (featuring both boys and girls) clarify the points made. Children who have been playing baseball for a while will want more sophisticated books, e.g., Sports Illustrated Baseball (Sports Illustrated Bks., 1993). This is particularly true in the explanations of the more complex parts of the game, such as pitching and the nuances of defense. As an introduction to skills and strategies for new players, this title is a much better pick than most of what is currently available.Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL
