The red-eyed tree frogs are beautiful, although if one reads fairy tales, it doesn't seem like any frog could be beautiful. Some of the amazing facts in this introductory nonfiction book will stick with readers. There are about 4,000 species of frogs, close to 600 of which are tree frogs. The red-eyed tree frog lives in the rain forests of Central America. They need to keep moist to survive and during the dry season, they become almost waxy, which helps the skin retain moisture. These frogs are nocturnal and they have excellent eyesight which helps them locate their prey. Once they have found an insect, they stick out their tongue to capture it. During the day when the frog sleeps, it blends in with the surrounding leaves. This camouflage helps protect it from birds, lizards and snakes. Kids will learn all about the reproductive cycle which is clearly explained and accompanied by excellent full-color photographs. At the end of the book there are notes for adults, a glossary and an index. 2001, Lerner, Ages 6 to 10, $22.60. Reviewer: Charles WymanChildren's Literature
