There's more to turkeys than meets the holiday platter, and Patent digs up all the details suitable for early readers. Here's an opportunity to learn the difference between the wild and the domesticated bird. Patent is especially good on description, and together with Munoz's well-keyed photographs, the mysteries of spurs, beards, snoods, and gobbles are revealed. As not much nonfiction is available on the fowl, this should be a must for school units at Thanksgiving time.

Gr 2-4-Although the title refers only to wild turkeys, Patent draws comparisons between domesticated turkeys and their wild cousins. Material is organized into short chapters that discuss physical characteristics, behavior, life cycle, and environment. Generous use of good-quality, full-color photographs also aid in readers' understanding of the vast differences between the animals' lives in the wild and on poultry farms. The writing style is clear and informative although sentences are short and choppy at times. Suggestions for related activities are included. Patent's Wild Turkey, Tame Turkey (Clarion, 1989) is for a slightly older audience. Much of the same material is covered but in a little more depth.
