         Editorial Review

Botswana in Pictures (Visual Geography Series)
- Book Review,
by Thomas O'Toole

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-- The visual material in this book is particularly rich and thoughtfully used. Full-color and black-and-white pictures illustrate key concepts, and the captions extend and highlight supplementary detail. Many identify the locations in the pictures, with place names included both on clear, uncluttered maps and in the index. The writing style is straightforward, using short sentences. Following current scholarship, the narrative does not include the use of the word "tribe" for political, ethnic, or kin groups. The discussion of the country's history focuses on the experiences of the people who live in present-day Botswana, rather than becoming bogged down in the details of European imperial rivalries in Southern Africa. Social and economic concepts are effectively developed by the inclusion of concrete facts and events. Unfortunately the index does not reflect the richness of the text, with important terms missing. Preferable to Dennis Gould's Botswana (Chelsea, 1988), this will be a valuable addition to both school and public library collections. --Loretta Kreider Andrews, Enoch Pratt Free Library, BaltimoreCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
