FROM THE CRITICS
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-- Brief but intense overviews of each country that discuss land, history and government, the people, and the economy. The abundance of good to excellent pictures, maps, charts, and graphs inform and complement the text. Facts are provided in a generally unbiased manner. Egypt and Lebanon contain illustrated charts depicting the status of women, showing literacy, proportion of school-aged girls who attend elementary and secondary schools, life expectancy, and the percentage of women in the income-producting work force. Madagascar includes a line graph depicting general life expectancy, urban population, and literacy rate. The political-historical information is inclusively precise. Sure to be a well-used series, these books are attractive and informative. --Ann Yarmal, Greenwich Library, Conn.
