Situating her subject in the traditionally perceived "gap" between George Eliot and Virginia Woolf, Zorn (English, Indiana U. Southeast) examines the critical aesthetics and philosophy of Vernon Lee as an example of the role of intellectual women at dawn of the 20th century. She argues that Lee's works and the popular reception they received suggest that easy dichotomies between the Victorian and the modern may be far too facile. Her subsequent fall into relative obscurity also provides insight into the construction of the modern itself, especially the way modernists institutionalized intellectual authority.
