Potent Brews - Book Reviews,
by Justin Willis
Potent Brews SYNOPSIS Willis (history, U. of Durham) argues that the practice of alcohol consumption both reflects and impacts patterns and constructions of power and authority. He examines changing patterns of consumption and power in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, arguing that traditional power arrangements were challenged in precolonial times as new drinking practice emerged that did not recognize elder men's ritual power over well-being. With the arrival of colonialism, some elder men allied with colonial powers, and alliance that was reflected in struggles to control drinking. However, the rise of entrepreneurship in alcoholic beverages led to these alliances becoming fractured along with the multiple sources of authority related to drink and in society in a whole.
