The Volta-Bani anticolonial war of 1915-1916 was one of the largest armed oppositions to colonialism in Africa and was put down by the French at great cost. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork and archival research, the authors examine the origins of the movement, its strategy, and the reasons for its initial success.
