About the Author PAUL HORGAN is a renowned writer, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, for is books Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History and Lamy of Sante Fe, His Life and Times. His most recent book, Of America Eat and West, is a broad collection from his multifaceted writings in fiction, history, and literary studies. He was director of the then active Wesleyan Center for Advanced Studies from 1962 to 1967, and is now Professor Emeritus of English and Author in Residence at Wesleyan University. He lives in Middletown, Connecticut. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR JOSEPH REED is the author of Faulkner's Narrative and of Three American Originals: John Ford, William Faulkner, and Charles Ives. He is also a painter and etcher of repute, whose work has been exhibited in New York, London, and Puerto Rico, Holland, France, Germany, Rumania, and India. He is married to Kit Reed, the novelist. They live in Middletown, Connecticut. ABOUT THE BARD JACQUES BARZUN, former provost of Columbia University, is a scholarly polymath, whose books include studies in the fine arts, history, criticism, and cultural biography, notably the two-volume masterpiece, Berlioz and the Romantic Century. He is recognized as a leading clerihewist.
