African Notebook

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Albert Schweitzer was already world renowned when he was persuaded to share with the public these candid reminiscences of early days at Lambarene, Gabon, Africa. The multitude of brief entries in this book capture the flavor of Schweitzer's mission in vignettes and philosophical musings on the history of the land, the culture, rituals of the native people, and his medical practice.

SYNOPSIS

First published in English in 1939, this volume contains reminiscences by Dr. Schweitzer of his time working in a hospital in Gabon. Schweitzer relates stories that reflect on the land, the culture, and his work. Naturally, much of his commentary reflects his position as a European in Africa during the period of colonization, although he was certainly motivated by more humanitarian concerns than many. Offensive language that is attributed to the original translator and not Schweitzer has been omitted. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
