Atlas of Clinical Nuclear Medicine
- Book Review,
by Ignac Fogelman, et al

From Book News, Inc.
Two world authorities (both at Guy's Hospital, London) present recent developments in clinical nuclear medicine--with timely coverage of SPECT. Superbly illustrated throughout with more than 3300 color and black and white photographs, the atlas covers every body system. For each, it details the radiopharmaceuticals with major agents used for imaging; normal scans and variants; tables of clinical indications; problem oriented pages of sequences of images. Final teaching points tie the material together, giving facts on marker placement, correlation of clinical findings with scan appearance. Text is to be found in brief section introductions; aside from this it is confined to captions to the myriad images. No bibliography. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

Atlas of Clinical Nuclear Medicine

ANNOTATION

This book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

FROM THE CRITICS

William G. Spies

This second edition nuclear medicine atlas isorganized by organ system. Each chapter consists of sections of anatomyand physiology, radiopharmaceuticals, normal studies, variants andartifacts, and finally, representative images from clinicalapplications related to the techniques in question. The purpose is toprovide a reference atlas of images from the various areas ofradionuclide imaging. Such a book may be a useful reference forresidents and practicing nuclear medicine physicians and radiologistswishing to see examples of the radionuclide findings in variousclinical entities. The book is largely successful in achieving thesegoals. The authors do not explicitly state their intended audience, but they presumably believe that the book will be useful to allphysicians, scientists, and technical staff involved in nuclearmedicine imaging studies. In my opinion, the book will most often beused as a reference and review guide for residents and to a lesserdegree, practicing physicians. The book is well organized. Asbefitting a clinical imaging atlas, it relies heavily on illustrations, including black-and-white and color images, figures, and tables. It ispublished on high-quality stock and has an attractive appearance. Onesignificant omission is the absence of any references. The table ofcontents is very brief, but the index is relatively complete.Highlighted text sections in red type and various tables are used toemphasize important points. This book is well organized andattractive. It will serve as a useful reference and review guide forresidents and practicing nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists.I would recommend it for departmental libraries and medical bookstores. Shortcomingsinclude the absence of references and the briefnature of the text sections of the atlas. In addition, a few topics aresomewhat outdated or underrepresented; for example, there is minimalemphasis on Tc-99m MAG-3 renal imaging, no mention of sestamibiparathyroid imaging, and no positron emittion tomography isincluded.
