Land and Lordship: Structures of Governance in Medieval Austria (Middle Ages Series) - Book Reviews,
by Otto Brunner, et al
Land and Lordship: Structures of Governance in Medieval Austria FROM THE CRITICS Booknews Photos illustrating the influence of the southern US upon the vernacular architecture of some 17,000 black American immigrants to Liberia after 1820. First published in 1939, and translated from the fourth German edition, a landmark in 20th century scholarship on the Middle Ages. Brunner (1898-1982) contends that the modern view of medieval society is tainted by our concept of the nation state. He pries beneath the assumptions, and finds a social and political system that is efficient and coherent, but very different from ours. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
