SYNOPSIS
Buzkashi (loosely translated as "goat-grabbing") is the Afghan game in which riders on horseback drag a goat or calf carcass to some specified goal. This anthropological work examines the two main forms of the game, finding that notions of authority are implicit in all phases of the game and that participants are well aware of it. The author finds the convening and playing of buzkashi games serves as an arena for the display of political competence in Afghanistan. First published in 1982, the work has been updated to include developments from the past two decades. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
