Bikeriders
- Book Review,
by Danny Lyon

Book Description
In 1968, just before Easy Rider roared its way into American consciousness, Danny Lyon published The Bikeriders. A seminal work of modern photojournalism, this landmark collection of photographs and interviews documents the abandon and risk implied in the name of the gang Lyon belonged to: the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club. With images and interviews that are as raw, alive, and dramatic today as they were three decades ago, this new edition includes startling new images: 15 additional black-and-white photographs and 14 color prints--long thought missing--of works originally published in black-and-white. With a new introduction by the author, The Bikeriders rides again, capturing like never before the dawn of the counterculture era.

About the Author
Danny Lyon is a writer and photographer whose photos of prison life, the Southern civil rights movement, and American Indian nations are legendary. He lives in the Hudson Valley.

Bikeriders

FROM THE PUBLISHER

"In 1965, Danny Lyon, a twenty-three-year-old veteran of the Southern civil rights movement, joined the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club. Riding a 650-cc Triumph and shooting with a Nikon Reflex and a Rolleiflex, he produced one of the seminal books of the 1960s: The Bikeriders. This work of realism read like fiction and presented a world as dangerous and romantic as the one depicted in films such as Easy Rider - released a year after the publication of The Bikeriders." "Recognized as a powerful work of photodocumentary, The Bikeriders helped sear the counterculture into the American mind. Yet as influential as the original book was, this edition contains photographs never seen: fifteen black-and-white pictures not included in the original, and fourteen color photographs long thought lost, all reproduced here for the first time." Including extensive interviews with racers and outlaws - the original edition being among the first books to use text from taped interviews - The Bikeriders is a vivid immersion in a culture that is now recognized as "the golden age" of motorcyclists, a world that few outsiders knew intimately in its heyday. Documenting the romance, risk, and abandon of dirt track racing and motorcycle gang life, the stories and photographs in The Bikeriders are as dramatic and real today as they were when they were lived, decades ago.

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

Armed with a tape recorder, cameras, and a Triumph 650, Lyon joined the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club in the late 1960s. As one of the gang-literally-Lyons was able to get the inside line on the life of outlaw bikers. After four years of shooting photos and recording stories, he produced this volume in 1968. It was the first such book to tackle the subject seriously. This Chronicle reprint includes all of the original material plus 15 new photos, and a new preface by the author.
