Beyond Baghdad: Postmodern War and Peace
- Book Review,
by Ralph Peters

Book Description
In Beyond Baghdad, America's most provocative writer on strategy recounts the liberation of Iraq and analyzes its implications for the future of U.S. military strategy and foreign policy. Author Ralph Peters describes future threats at home and abroad, offers startling insights into today's most pressing issues, and highlights global opportunities that lie, unrecognized, within our grasp. Written in his trademark style--powerful, lively, and accessible--Peters' themes range from the lessons of recent combat experiences to a proposed revolutionary redesign of Washington's international strategy. Certain to be widely read and heatedly discussed, Beyond Baghdad is destined to become one of the most influential books of the decade.

From the Inside Flap
". . . simply one of the most creative and stimulating writers on national security we have produced in the post-WWII era . . . brilliant analysis . . . explosively direct . . . powerful and clear . . ." --Barry R. McCaffrey, General, USA (Ret.) The boldest, most visionary work yet by Ralph Peters, this hard-hitting book explains what really happened on the battlefields of Iraq--and what the implications are for our security. Peters peers deep into the future to describe unparalleled global opportunities for the United States. Fiercely independent, the author rejects all party-line thinking to help us understand the complexity, danger, and promise of our troubled world. Whether dissecting the War on Terror or investigating the world’s dangerous backwaters, he brings to bear an unparalleled combination of first-hand experience of our military and foreign trouble spots with a unique ability to explain difficult issues in straightforward language--and with a devastating sense of humor. Written for a broad audience, the essays and commentaries in Beyond Baghdad take on subjects as diverse as the hidden divisions within the Islamic world and the global impact of women’s liberation, the challenges of expeditionary warfare in the Age of Terror and the frustrated strategic vision of Fidel Castro. Unashamedly patriotic, tough-minded, and merciless toward false pieties, Ralph Peters has established an unparalleled track record as America’s most accurate forecaster of tomorrow’s strategic dangers and opportunities. Beyond Baghdad is essential reading for all Americans concerned about our nation’s future.

About the Author
Ralph Peters is a strategist and adventurer, a former Army officer and best-selling novelist, a commentator and world traveler--and arguably America’s most independent thinker. Convinced that only first-hand observation gives us a practical understanding of the world’s problems, he has traveled to almost sixty countries and to every continent except Antarctica. In addition to his acclaimed and influential books on strategy, Fighting for the Future and Beyond Terror, Peters is the author of prize-winning works of fiction, published both under his own name and under the pen name Owen Parry. He has written for a wide range of American and international newspapers and journals, and he appears frequently in the broadcast media. Ralph Peters maintains strict independence from all partisan organizations and finds the sight of burning bridges inspiring. General Barry McCaffrey is a Professor of International Security Studies at West Point. He also serves as a national security analyst for NBC News. He was wounded-in-action three times during four combat tours.
