Magritte, 1898-1998 FROM OUR EDITORS
Magritte's art has been reproduced for the masses in advertising and on posters, his style copied and parodied so frequently, that his images may be better known than he is. This volume, published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Magritte's birth, features essays written by a variety of experts on Magritte, his time, and his influence on the way we see our world. Special sections feature interviews with the artist and a discussion of Magritte's influence on cinema.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
The art of Rene Magritte is known throughout the world. His paintings have become part of the modern vernacular, familiar not only to art lovers but to the general public as well through their reproduction on posters and in advertisements. This profusely illustrated volume accompanies the centennial exhibition at the Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels. The book contains four essays and several smaller contributions by renowned authorities, friends, and contemporaries of the artist. More than 350 paintings, gouaches, papiers colles, posters, drawings, and objects are reproduced in full color, and the essays are augmented by 150 comparative and archival illustrations. Adding to the book's reference value, a special section highlights supplemental subjects such as Magritte and film, the artist's commercial work, and the Magritte archives, and includes a chronology.
FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
Handsome and serious yet accessible, this book catalogs an extensive exhibition held at the Royal Museum Brussels this year. It covers the full spectrum of Magritte's work, from the omnipresent, mass-reproduced images to the more difficult and lesser-known photography and commercial poster work he did. The shortish essays, by Belgian curators and other acknowledged authorities (including David Sylvester and Sarah Whitfield), are clear; a personal contribution by the artist's friend Harry Torczyner is helpful in understanding Magritte the man. All in all, this is a very good book with very good illustrations on an enormously popular artist. For general collections; specialized collections will find it a useful complement to Sylvester's five-volume catalogue raisonn (Sotheby, 1992- 97).--Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Lib.
