The Art of Romare Bearden FROM THE PUBLISHER
Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was one of America's great artistic innovators, blazing his own trail in a time of turbulent cultural change. While his work offers an invaluable view of mid-twentieth-century African-American experience, it has also come to occupy a significant place in the wider history of American art and speaks to the universal concerns of artists everywhere.
Born in North Carolina and coming of age in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance, Bearden was surrounded from an early age by writers, musicians, artists, and intellectuals who presided over an extraordinary period of creative ferment. With keen aesthetic sensitivity, the insight of a philosopher, and the courage of a pioneer, Bearden absorbed images and ideas that he later wove into his colorful, complex, and imaginative art. His work is infused with the sounds, intervals, and rhythms of jazz and the blues; the majesty and mystery of popular religion and obscure ritual; echoes of European old master painting and African art; and the atmosphere of the places he loved.
In addition to reproducing examples of Bearden's well-known collages, photostats, and watercolors, The Art of Romare Bearden includes paintings in gouache and oil, murals, book illustrations, costume designs, and his only known sculpture. Much of this art has been culled from private collections and is rarely seen. Fine's definitive essay, based on new research, is accompanied by shorter essays on the artist's European and African sources, his own writings, and contemporary criticism of his art.

FROM THE CRITICS
The New York Times
Ruth Fine, the curator of the big Bearden retrospective at the National Gallery in Washington, lays out Bearden's extraordinary network of friends, including Harlem Renaissance luminaries as well as emigre intellectuals and artists such as Hannah Arendt and Bearden's teacher, the German caricaturist George Grosz. This beautifully illustrated book -- don't miss the dazzling Caribbean images of the 1980's like ''In a Green Shade (Homage to Marvell)'' -- should win new admirers for this great American artist.

During the next two years, a major retrospective exhibition of Romare Bearden's work will travel from the National Gallery in Washington, DC, to San Francisco, Dallas, New York, and Atlanta. Such an occasion calls for a catalog as compelling and far-reaching as this elegant volume, which provides an intellectually stimulating and visually exciting record of the worlds of Bearden (1911-88). As part of the Harlem Renaissance, Bearden found his influences in a variety of geographies, cultures, and religions: Harlem and the Caribbean, European and African art, blues and hymns. Fine (exhibition curator, National Gallery) provides a splendid general view of the life and development of the artist's work; essays by a number of outstanding scholars cover more specific areas. Many of the works included have rarely been seen by the public, giving readers a marvelous opportunity to view a wide range of paintings, book illustrations, and costume designs along with the better-known collages, all in finely executed illustrations (224 color, 86 b&w). This important contribution to the history of 20th-century American art is highly recommended.-Paula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
