Encyclopedia of College and University Name Histories FROM THE PUBLISHER
"During the past fifty years, higher education has undergone many changes. As these changes in the educational process and philosophy occurred, so did college and university names. While the news that a school has changed its name may receive passing mention in the media, such an event is a telling moment nevertheless. A college or university it not just an institution - it is a living, breathing entity with its own life and times, and its name is an integral part of its existence. A name can tell us something about the school's heritage, location, curricula, philosophy, ownership, religious affiliation, and in many cases its development, growth, and direction." This useful reference work contains the complete name history, mergers, and location changes of over 1,300 U.S. college and universities, including a chronological listing with years of each name change, merger, or relocation.
SYNOPSIS
Brenner is a sports historian. During research for an earlier work, College Basketball's National Championships: The Complete Record of Every Tournament Ever Played (Scarecrow Press, 1999), he came across Alice Songe's American Universities and Colleges: A Dictionary of Name Changes (Scarecrow Press, 1978). Brenner's newest reference text is an updated version of Songe's work, written at the request of Scarecrow Press. It contains the name, merger, and location history of 1,304 U.S. four-year colleges and universities. Entries are alphabetically organized by current names of the institutions; an index of former names provides cross-referencing to current names. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
