About the Author
Arnold Hughes, until recently Director of the Centre of West African Studies at The University of Birmingham, has specialized in the study of the more recent political history of The Gambia and written numerous articles and book chapters on the domestic politics and external relations of The Gambia. Harry A. Gailey, a professor and coordinator of African studies at San Jose University, is a pioneering historian of The Gambia and the author of numerous articles about the country. He is the author of a history of the Gambia as well as the first edition two editions of the current volume.
