The "Historical Dictionary of Thailand" updates the previous edition and provides a quick, general reference work on Thailand for scholars, students, and general readers. Thailand is a newly industrializing country (NIC) with a rich cultural heritage. Its recorded history begins in the 12th century and it was never colonized by a European power. Author Biography: May Kyi Win was appointed in 1990 as Curator of the Donn V. Hart Southeast Asia Collection at Northern Illinois University at DeKalb, IL. Harold E. Smith is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Northern Illinois University. He authored the "The Historical and Cultural Dictionary of Thailand" (Scarecrow Press, 1976) and was a visiting Fulbright Professor in Thailand 1964-66 and 1975-76.
