Author Biography: Phillip C. Naylor is Director of the Western Civilization Program and Associate Professor of History at Marquette University. He is coeditor of "Algeria: State and Society" (1992) and has authored articles for the "Encyclopedia Americana" and the "Academic American Encyclopedia". He is currently working on a book on the French-Algerian postcolonial relationship. Alf Andrew Heggoy (d. 1987) was Professor of History at University of Georgia. His books include "Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in Algeria" (1972); "The French Conquest of Algiers, 1830: An Oral Tradition" (1986); and "Through Foreign Eyes: Western Attidues Toward North Africa" (editor, 1982). He helped organize and presided over the French Colonial Historical Society,and edited its "Proceedings". An annual book award is presented by the Society in Heggoy's memory. Both Heggoy and Naylor have published articles in a variety of journals including "Muslim World, Africana Journal, Africa Today, "and "African Studies Review".
