Liberia: A National Polity in Transition FROM THE PUBLISHER
Established as a modern state in 1822, and becoming an independent republic in 1847, Liberia is the product of a complex African past. Its birth as a nation was largely made possible because of the efforts of white and black Americans. The country sought to pursue a social reformist course in the decades following the Second World War, and its role in the creation of the Organization of African Unity was significant. Today Liberia remains a country at war with itself, de facto partitioned and under the administration of contending 'governments'.
