FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Naomi Butler
This book is a simple introduction to the characteristics of amphibians in general and of select species. This book is intended for easy and juvenile sections of libraries and/or for the lower elementary grades. It will also serve as a part of a library of an interested child who desires information about amphibians. The photographs are great for young children because of the different amphibians shown. The text size is large and well spaced for the beginning reader. The use of chapters organizes the material for easy absorption of information. The chapters include Amphibians, Types of Amphibians, Eating Habits, Young Amphibians, Pet Salamanders, Tree Frogs, Caecilians and Endangered Houston Toads. There is a good Animal Classification chart that would have been better placed in the beginning of the book. There is a question with an answer about what the reader has learned and a glossary to explain word meanings. An Index is included. This book in "The Animal Kingdom" series is one of six titles to introduce the young reader to the classification of animals in the animal kingdomᄑAmphibians, Arthropods, Birds, Fish, Mammals and Reptiles. The series aims to inform readers about each animal group and its main identifying features, and to read about wild, domestic and endangered animals from each group. 2002, Chelsea Clubhouse/Chelsea House Publishers,
