Gr 6-9-- Engagingly clear and concise writing distinguishes this brief, candid overview of South Africa as Canesso elucidates difficult historical, social, economic, and political facts. A map, a section of ``Facts at a Glance,'' and a chronology of people and events from prehistory through 1988 precede nine chapters that survey history, topography, people, politics, and culture. Of particular interest are descriptions of events leading up to the Boer War, the divisions of the homelands, and the clarification of the four races recognized under the apartheid laws. There are numerous dull black-and-white photographs, which nevertheless provide appropriate illustrations for the text; eight pages of color photographs are bound in at the center of the book. The brief glossary does not have a pronunciation guide and does not include many of the names, such as ``Xhosa,'' that are mentioned in the book. This is not likely to attract poor or reluctant readers in the same way as South Africa in Pictures (Lerner, 1988), with its many more colorful illustrations, graphics, and numerous sub-headings. It is, however, a well-conceived and well-written introduction to South Africa with plenty of information for school reports. --Ann Yarmal, Greenwich Library, Conn.

Gr 7 UpTwo clearly presented and straightforward books that place each areas complicated history and political problems in perspective. South Africa goes back two or three million years when hominids, the ancestors of modern humans, inhabited the area and continues through Nelson Mandelas rise to power to the present day. West Bank/Gaza Strip also details the long and contentious history of a highly volatile region. In addition to providing extensive histories, both books look at the physical features of the land, the peoples lives, the regions economies, and the outlook for the future. Detailed maps highlighting the areas discussed are extremely helpful as are the Facts at a Glance and History at a Glance sections. Average-quality black-and-white photographs and a few full-color shots appear in each volume.
