Jewish Women Fiction Writers (Women Writers and Their Works Series) FROM THE CRITICS
School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-This collection of critical essays examines the work of Hortense Calisher, Edna Ferber, Lillian Hellman, Tillie Olsen, Cynthia Ozick, Grace Paley, Dorothy Parker, Marge Piercy, Gertrude Stein, and Anzia Yezierska. However, the writers' religious backgrounds are not discussed separately in the text and remain only a very thin thread. A brief biographical introduction to each author is followed by approximately 11 essays by well-known writers and critics. These extracts present a cursory look at the women's writing and their lives. A bibliography of each woman's work is also included. The absence of an index is a drawback for anyone doing research.-Malka Keck, The Temple Tifereth Israel, Beachwood, OH
