Ballet School
- Book Review,
by Naia Bray-Moffatt, David Handley (Illustrator)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-DK's signature photography beautifully illustrates this introductory title. Though it covers no new ground, the text is written from the perspective of a young girl who is nervous about beginning ballet school. Young readers embarking on their own lessons may find reassurance in Jamie's story. Just the right amount of information is presented for the intended audience, including the major positions and steps. Most of the spreads feature a segment of a typical class such as warm-up, barre work, leaping, and improvisation. One quibble is that only boys are shown in the section on leaping and jumping. Additionally, while the girls' clothing is described in detail, the boys' attire is not mentioned. Still, balletomanes of either gender will be interested in the experiences of the young dancers depicted here.Cheri Estes Dobbs, Detroit Country Day Middle School, Beverly Hills, MICopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
K-Gr. 3. This large-format book looks inside a ballet studio as a group of beginning students, four girls and two boys, take a class. The double-page-spread format breaks up the subject into shorter topics such as warm-up, the barre, and leaps. On the last pages, after watching two older students demonstrate a pas de deux, the children put on costumes and makeup for their own performances. The text, broken up into small paragraphs accompanying the many color photographs on each page, shows a solid, practical knowledge of the aims and techniques of a good ballet class for young children. Some of the smaller photos will be useful to ballet students in figuring out, for instance, the correct position of the arms in fourth position. Young children, particularly girls, will find this an enticing glimpse of ballet class. Carolyn Phelan

FROM THE CRITICS

The New York Times

Ballet School is, by its own account, a reference book, and in many ways an attractive one, of the visually distinctive sort that DK Publishing does well, crammed with really striking photographs, by David Handley, of attractive young dancers, boys and girls both. The photographs also illustrate the rudiments of ballet in a useful and instructive way. — Adam Liptak

Publishers Weekly

Filled with inviting photographs of six bright-eyed girls and boys at work in a sunny studio, the oversize Ballet School lets readers sit in on classes at a formal ballet school, from the first day to the end-of-the-year performance. The text, organized around the experiences of a girl named Jamie, combines a personable tone with lots of information. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Children's Literature - Marya Jansen-Gruber

Starting something new can be a little intimidating, and having a helping hand is always welcome. This book provides a very personal helping hand for those of us who want to start ballet lessons. Our journey begins with an introduction to Jamie, a little girl who is going to ballet class for the first time. For the rest of the book we participate with Jamie, sharing her day and feeling very much a part of her experience. Each double spread introduces us to a new component of the ballet class. We are told what we will need to take to class, what to expect once we are there, what kinds of exercises and moves we will practice, and why classes are managed the way they are. We also learn about the performances, and even a little about the costumes and makeup. This is a comforting and friendly companion to take along on a first venture into the world of ballet. The photographs show smiling faces and children (both boys and girls) enjoying themselves and making friends. As a guide to the newcomer to ballet, this book offers reassurance and much information. 2003, Dorling Kindersley,
