FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Jessica Creager
This book answers many questions about insects and encourages young entomologists to study more about them. While the text provides many fun and fascinating facts, the detailed photographs enable the reader to examine a variety of insects. One interesting fact is that there is a difference between insects and bugs. Bugs, another name for arthropods, include insects, spiders, and more. Insects have three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen) and two antennae. Spiders are therefore not insects because they have eight legs and two body parts. Another interesting fact is that cockroaches have been found on the space shuttle. And each leg on a water bug has a different job: the front legs are for eating, the middle legs are for balance and the back legs are for steering. Also included is a list of intriguing, insect-related Web sites. Elementary-aged children will be fascinated by this close-up look at bugs. Part of the "Secret World" series. 2001, Dorling Kindersley, Ages 6 up.
