FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

This unusual book teaches art history from an intriguing perspective-that of the kitchen. Fedele, who owned a gallery in New York City for many years, selected some 90 artists, from Leonardo da Vinci to Salvador Dali to contemporary names working today, and presents their favorite foods or, in some cases, dishes or menus inspired by their work. Well-known chef Mario Batali, for example, devised a halibut recipe based on a "grocery list" written (and illustrated) by Michelangelo on the back of a letter. Something of a scrapbook/portfolio, the book also includes reproductions of artworks, photographs, and historical background and anecdotes contributed by curators and others in the art world, as well as reminiscences and notes from many of the artists themselves. This will appeal to cooks with an interest in the arts, of course, but even more so to art history students and scholars. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
