Author Biography: Welsh-born architect, designer, and teacher Owen Jones (1808-1874) traveled extensively in Europe and Asia collecting the designs found in The Grammar of Ornament, which he published in an effort to counter the fussy, "mongrelized" decoration of the Victorian Era. Jones's essay Manifesto of Design (included in the DK edition of The Grammar of Ornament) helped spark the Arts & Crafts movement in Europe and America.
