FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature
The Merriam-Webster name goes back quite a few years¾it was one of the dictionaries I used in school many decades ago. This new edition contains 32,000 entries and more than 3,000 illustrations. While it is not a backpack item, it will be useful to kids in the classroom, school libraries and home. The endpapers provide topological and political maps of the world. There is an introductory section explaining how to use the dictionary that is worth taking a few minutes to read. Interspersed throughout are color pictures and features. The latter give more detailed explanations and larger pictures, often with labels to promote understanding of a topic. Entries contain a guide to pronunciation, variant spelling if appropriate, homographs, part of speech, the definition and more. An interesting feature is the use of "word history" insets that provide the etymology of selected words. To illustrate--"We can trace the English word etymology back to a Greek word. This Greek word meant 'the true meaning of a word based on its origin.' This word came in turn from a Greek word that meant 'true.'" A pronunciation guide runs across the bottom of the pages and an alphabetic letter guide runs down the side of each page. The final pages contain a "Reference Section" that takes a closer look at the continents and shows the flags of the world in a decent size. It lists the fifty United States with capitals, the dates they joined the union and their flags, and lists Presidents and Vice Presidents. It contains abbreviations, guides to pronunciation, signs and symbols, and a picture index. A good choice for the money. 2000, DK,
