Library Journal
Perhaps the first popular guide to pregnancy and childbirth to qualify as a coffee-table book, this text combines glossy paper and lavish illustrations with lists of practical tips and a comprehensive text. Contents include preparing for pregnancy, conceiving, fitness, managing labor, and sensuality during pregnancy, in addition to standard topics such as nutrition, prenatal care, common complaints, birthing choices, and medical emergencies. How to care for a newborn and adjusting to parenthood is also covered. Stoppard, author of many books, including Sr. Miriam Stoppard's Pregnancy & Birth Book (Ballantine, 1987), emphasizes throughout the impact of pregnancy on the mother and the effects of her behavior on the developing child. Illustrations include attractive line drawings, photographs of culturally diverse parents and infants, and even ultrasound reproductions. Highly recommended.-- Kathryn Hammell Carpenter, Univ. of Illinois, Chicago
BookList - Mary Jo Peer
Pregnant women who want just one book for the childbearing year will have it made with Conception, Pregnancy and Birth. To describe this "bible" as such is not an exaggeration: it has at least something for everyone. Even technical aspects are clearly explained. Doctor and author Stoppard illuminates her easy-to-read text with numerous color photos--especially notable are the fetuses and nude pregnant bodies. Although she recommends restricting weight gain during pregnancy, and declares that single working mothers do not create a detrimental situation for their children--both topics are under debate--such flaws are minor. The relatively high price of this book makes it all the more an essential purchase for libraries, so it will be accessible to women who can't afford it.
