Irish Wedding Traditions : Using Your Irish Heritage to Create the Perfect Wedding
- Book Review,
by Shannon McMahon-Lichte

From Library Journal
In an era where anything Irish seems to be selling, a book on Irish wedding traditions was inevitable. A professional event planner/screenwriter of Irish decent, McMahon-Lichte discusses Irish customs related to courtship, the ceremony, the reception, the honeymoon, and early marriage period. She offers suggestions for incorporating these traditions into modern American weddings and includes examples of Irish music, poetry, and recipes. A short bibliography and list of web sites provide further sources for research. This slim volume is not as extensive as other ethnic wedding guides like Eric Merrill Budd's Scottish Tartan Weddings (Hippocrene, 2000), which has more illustrations, offers a glossary, and addresses same-sex marriages. It will be popular, however, wherever Irish American populations are high and will have a perennial spot on March's Irish Heritage displays. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Book Description
There are 45 million Americans of Irish descent- and more that ever, they are fervent in their love of Ireland. Irish Wedding Traditions is a lovely guide that will give couples about to marry numerous ideas for planning a wedding using the conventions and traditions from their Irish heritage. The book is filled with long-forgotten historical and contemporary Irish customs- from vows and rituals to symbolic flowers, food, spirits and song. Included in the chapters are Irish inspired ideas for dressing for the occasion, decorating the ceremony and reception with an Irish touch, designing the perfect Irish wedding invitation, as well as suggestions for registering for Irish gifts. This one-of-a-kind guide will be invaluable to future brides and grooms, Irish couples planning an anniversary, or anyone wanting to incorporate the lovely accents of Irish culture into an unforgettable party or truly unique wedding day.

From the Publisher
A delightful gift book, to be passed from generation to generation. This book should be on the shelf of anyone with a passion for Ireland, it's people and customs.

From the Author
Like many people of Irish descent, I have spent my life wondering about my ancestors, their personal histories and what makes me “Irish”. I feel an immediate attachment and a sense of belonging when I hear a bit of Irish music or read a phrase of Irish poetry. I look at the old photographs of my grandparents and their parents before them and wonder about their struggles to create a home and family here in America. When I met and fell in love with my husband, it seemed only appropriate to include my Irish heritage, which I had such a strong affinity for, as part of our wedding day. This book will help you include your unique Irish spirit as part of the most important day of your life. What I have tried to do in much of Irish Wedding Traditions is to update many of the oldest Irish wedding customs, so that they can be used in a contemporary wedding. I have also included many of the Irish wedding practices that are currently popular in Ireland, so that a couple may have many different Irish traditions to choose from when planning their wedding.

About the Author
