FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Trina Heidt
With Winnie the Pooh and his Hundred Acre Woods Pals, preschoolers will be eager to discover all of the wonders of nature in this surprisingly good book. This encyclopedia is divided into five broad chapters. Each is further broken down by page with each page covering a very specific topic. Each topic is discussed in three small sections of the to five sentences each. This is perfect for active preschoolers with limited attention spans. The information is just specific enough to educate without technical terminology overload. Each section also lends itself to encouraging questions and further discussions. Stunning, color photographs from around the world fill the page opposing the information page and are abundant throughout the entire book. The photos alone will captivate the interest of young ones and will likely be the driving force behind grabbing their interest long enough to read a short section. I was skeptical of this book at first because I generally don not like character books that claim to be educational, but this one surprised me with its ease of use, general but age appropriate information and somewhat limited focus on the Winnie the Pooh characters. This is an obvious choice for Pooh bear fans but is also a great choice for parents with curious preschoolers who are interested in nature. 2003, Disney Enterprises, Ages 2 to 6.
