FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Judy Silverman
It is 1768. Samuel has been taken through a time/space portal to the land of Nefandus, where he is one of the thousands of slaves collected from various times and places on Earth. Three other slaves have been waiting for Samuel, who is, it seems, one of "the Four," who will ultimately save the world. As he tries to adjust to his new situation, the other three, Kyle, Berto, and Obie, become his friends. Some day they will all return to their own times. But for now, toiling in the mines, Samuel can only dream of returning home. Then the beautiful Ashley tells him that she has the power to take him to one of the portals. She cannot determine exactly when they will arrive, but Samuel is desperate, and decides that he will trust her. Bad move. They arrive in 20th century Los Angeles, pursued by Regulators (police-creatures) from Nefandus. Ashley has betrayed him. The other three somehow show up in L.A., and from then on it is one (mis)adventure after another. It is a good thing that there is another volume to come, because this one ends on an indeterminate note. For fans of space- and time-travel. This is Book 2 in the "Sons of the Dark"series. 2004, Volo/Hyperion, Ages 12 up.
