- Book Review,
by IEEE Computer Society Staff

From Book News, Inc.
Fifty-seven papers from a March 2003 symposium discuss recent research on databases for biological data, phylogenetic trees, medical image processing, clustering algorithms, gene expressions, and protein structures. Among the bioinformatics topics are prediction of contact maps using support vector machines, a model of random sequences for de nova peptide sequencing, and a framework for cancer-related genes mining over the internet. The bioengineering topics include analysis of spontaneous activity in cultured brain tissue using the discrete wavelet transform, vessel extraction from medical images, and measuring the asymmetries of skin lesions with fuzzy borders.
