FROM THE CRITICS

Nancy Fairchild

This is the fifth edition of a pharmacology textbook that provides the reader with the information necessary to safely administer medications. The book begins with introductory material on drugs and drug therapy such as sources of drugs, drug legislation, pharmacokinetics, drug interactions and incompatibilities, and special considerations for the pediatric and geriatric client. The rest of the text is organized according to drug classifications. In these chapters, information is presented regarding pharmacological principles of drug action when it is used in clinical practice and related nursing implications. This book provides the reader with accurate, up-to-date information concerning the therapeutic classifications of medications, specific drugs and drug therapies, and their related nursing implications. The book is targeted for students of nursing as well as seasoned practitioners who desire to update their knowledge on current medications. One of the features of this book is the integration of the nursing process throughout and its application to clinical practice. Pertinent nursing diagnoses are summarized at the beginning of each drug classification chapter. The nursing care plans provide assessment data, nursing diagnosis, measurable goals for expected outcomes, nursing interventions and evaluation. Home Care Hints are also provided for nurses providing care to clients in the home setting. In addition to more than 90 new drugs added to this text, new topics have also been included, such as collaborative client problems, sequencing oral medication administration, etc. This pharmacology book provides an excellent up-to-date reference for students, faculty, and theexperienced clinician. It is very readable and information is easy to locate. Emphasis on pharmacologic principles and nursing process application is stressed. Very helpful to the learner is that key nursing implications are highlighted and tables summarize valuable information. In addition, an electronic study guide (Windows) disk is provided as a tutoring system for the student. An instructor's guide and a computerized test bank are also available.
