Kobe Bryant: Star Guard - Book Review,
by Nick Kennedy

From Booklist Reviewed with Ken Rappoport's Sheryl Swoopes. Gr. 4-8. More detailed than titles in the publisher's Sports Great series, these biographies in the Sports Reports series brings readers up close to the sports action. Both titles follow the standard biographical route from childhood through high school and finally to professional teams. What will appeal most to readers are the exciting courtside descriptions that give play-by-play accounts, but also interesting is the business side of sports--the decisions to turn pro and the glimpses of the intricate politics of player drafting and trading. Statistics appear at the end of each book, but they're also woven in throughout the text. It's too bad the black-and-white photos aren't better quality; there are some particularly blurry shots in Kobe. Readers looking for information about the players off court will be disappointed. Nevertheless, these offer good intros to the athletes' careers and with their simple, accessible language will draw in a wide range of readers.
