Direct Democracy in Switzerland - Book Reviews,
by Gregory A. Fossedal
Direct Democracy in Switzerland FROM THE CRITICS Booknews While discussing the differences between the Swiss form of democracy compared to other types around the world, Fossedal (affiliated with Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, a Washington D.C. research foundation) includes some of his own experiences in that country. He uses these examples to illuminate his discussions of the Swiss character and how it is determined by its institutions. After a brief overview of the country's history since 1291, the book examines Switzerland's current political institutions, such as its Constitution, judicial system, and referendum system, evaluating them and considering whether they might be worth emulating by other nations. The author also looks at issues that concern the Swiss, such as education, taxes, crime, family, and maintaining a cohesive citizenry in a multi-lingual country. Annotation c.
