QuarkXPress 5 Bible

FROM OUR EDITORS

The Barnes & Noble Review
Quark, the software company that can never be accused of promoting rapid obsolescence, has delivered a new version of QuarkXPress. This is not quite as rare as the coming of Halley's comet. Still, it's big news to millions of graphic designers who spend more time with Quark than with their families. If you're upgrading to QuarkXPress 5, or even considering it, QuarkXPress 5 Bible is your most systematic guide to this new package.

So, what's new in QuarkXPress 5? Primarily, support for designing web pages, outputting PDF, and tagging documents with XML. If you're already creating a print document, it's now easier to repurpose for e-media.

The web support includes hyperlinks, HTML preview, tables (also useful for print), and layers (great for multilingual documents -- just swap out a layer to change languages). QuarkXPress 5 Bible covers these features in an entirely new section. It also offers detailed coverage of other changes, including underline styles, search for text-flow problems, and Quark's long-overdue interface streamlining.

But one great thing about this book hasn't changed: the real-world focus on managing workflow, effective use of style sheets, libraries, templates, automation, and so forth. That's still here -- better than ever. (Bill Camarda)

Bill Camarda is a consultant, writer, and web/multimedia content developer with nearly 20 years' experience in helping technology companies deploy and market advanced software, computing, and networking products and services. He served for nearly ten years as vice president of a New Jersey–based marketing company, where he supervised a wide range of graphics and web design projects. His 15 books include Special Edition Using Word 2000 and Upgrading & Fixing Networks For Dummies®, Second Edition.
