Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This simple book, subtitled A Lift the Cat-Flap Book, tells of Clara, a little girl who has a cat named Jack. On several of the right-hand pages there is a yellow door with a flap at the bottom that is a door for Jack. Every time Clara hears a scratch, she rushes to the door to see if Jack has returned. The reader lifts the flap and finds, not the cat, but other animals underneath. In a development that is never fully explained, under the next-to-last flap there stands an amazing collection of people, animals and storybook characters that have come for a party. On the last page, as Clara is washing the party dishes, Jack arrives at the door flap. 2002, Candlewick Press, Ages 3 to 6.
