Encyclopedia of Leadership
- Book Review,
by George R. Goethals (Editor), et al

From Booklist
*Starred Review* People are fascinated by the stories of leaders, but not much has been written about the forces that shape them. This set brings together "what truly matters about leadership" to map an emerging discipline that draws from history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, political science, and psychology. It seeks to answer questions such as what is leadership? What is a great leader? What is a great follower? What are the types of leadership? And how does someone become a leader? The set was designed with the needs of several user communities in mind, including students, scholars, and professionals who want to know who the real leaders are and how they got that way. One of the general editors, George J. Goethals, is the founder of the leadership program at Williams College, and the senior editor, James MacGregor Burns, is the Woodrow Wilson Professor of Government emeritus at Williams and senior fellow at the University of Richmond's Jepson School of Leadership, the nation's first undergraduate school of leadership studies. The remaining 17 associate editors and editorial board members represent the mainstream of educational programs and professional leadership academies internationally. The four volumes contain 373 entries of 1,000-6,000 words each, 150 photos, 300 sidebars from primary and secondary sources, and four appendixes. Entries are arranged alphabetically, but the "Reader's Guide" in the front matter organizes them into 19 broad categories, such as "Biographies," "Followership," "Leadership Styles," "Religion." and "Women and Gender." Entries cover such diverse topics as Achievement motivation; Activism; Alexander the Great; Alinsky, Saul; Apartheid in South Africa, demise of; and Attribution processes. Each article is signed and provides suggestions for further reading plus cross-references. More than 100 sidebars add dimension to the set by providing texts of or excerpts from speeches, mission statements, journal articles, Web sites, and other sources. Appendixes include a bibliography of significant books on leadership; a directory of leadership programs; presidential speeches on foreign policy and war; and excerpts from the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, the Analects, and the Qur'an that illustrate leadership concepts. In addition to the "Reader's Guide," a list of sidebars and a detailed and extensive index facilitate navigation.Because there really is nothing available like this encyclopedia, it is a must buy for academic libraries, particularly where leadership is taught as an academic topic. In addition, it is recommended for any academic and large public library that can afford the rather hefty price tag. Extremely well done, with good quality print and illustrations, this work should become an important resource for active citizens as well as for managers and scholars. Diana Shonrock

Review
"Not just for reference, this is an essential learning resource for libraries and the personal collections of modern leaders. Narratives, examples, photographs, and illustrations illuminate the ideas and concepts being examined, making the set readable, attention-grabbing, and unordinary. Readers can explore leadership theories and practices, and examine the effects of leadership. More volumes are promised in this source that brings interest and excitement to a subject overlooked by the consultants, CEOs, and coaches whose earlier works captured a small view of leadership subject matter. Summing Up: Highly recommended for all collections."

Review
"This new Encyclopedia provides leaders with the historical perspective and a vision of the tenuous future so essential if leaders of the future are to redefine leadership on their own terms, with their own people."

Encyclopedia of Leadership

FROM THE PUBLISHER

From the earliest times people have been entranced by stories about leaders-about Greek city state rulers, Roman consuls, Chinese emperors, religious potentates, military conquerors, and politicians. Perhaps more importantly, leadership is a challenge and an opportunity facing millions of people in their professional and personal lives.

The Encyclopedia of Leadership brings together for the first time everything that is known and truly matters about leadership as part of the human experience.

Developed by the award-winning editorial team at Berkshire Publishing Group, the Encyclopedia includes hundreds of articles, written by 400 leading scholars and experts from 17 countries, exploring leadership theories and leadership practice. Over a third of the work-some 500,000 words-is devoted to biographical essays and to case studies focused on leaders (and their followers). Articles and sidebars show leadership in action-in corporations and state houses, schools, churches, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

Questions the Encyclopedia of Leadership will answer:

- What is a leader? - What is a great leader? - How does someone become a leader? - What are the types of leadership? - How can leadership theories help us understand contemporary situations? - How can I be a good (and maybe great) leader?

The Encyclopedia of Leadership is an unprecedented learning resource. Scholars, students, professionals, and active citizens will turn to the Encyclopedia for guidance on the theory and practice of leadership, for the stories of great leaders, and for the tools and knowledge they need to lead in the 21st century.

SYNOPSIS

Goethals (Williams College), Georgia J. Sorenson (U. Maryland) and Jas. MacGregor Burns (also Williams) have edited a wide-ranging reference of some 400 articles (1,000 to 6,000 words each) by 330 contributors. Topics are diverse: Castro, Rockefeller (JD), Kroc, The Beatles, gangs, E. Timor, Lombardi, D-Day.... Biographies account for a third of the 1.2 million words. Topics include case studies, gender issues, and theories that relate to business, management, politics, history, psychology. The set contains 150 illustrations and 300 sidebars from public records, memoirs, newspapers. Four appendices (95 p.) provide: a general bibliography; a directory of educational programs; presidential speeches on foreign policy and war (including the younger Bush's 2002 State of the Union speech); and extracts from sacred texts. While no "see also" references appear in the entries the set contains 125 pages of index (in v.4 only). Sage has, again, been the first to hit the market with a major reference in a rapidly growing field of the social sciences. Virtually every academic and large public library will need the Encyclopedia of Leadership. No mention of plans for an electronic edition. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

This authoritative reference source, edited by Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential biographer Burns and written by some 400 scholars from 17 countries, comprehensively covers a burgeoning new field of academic study leadership. Its scope is amazingly broad, reflecting the interdisciplinary applications of the subject. The 373 alphabetically arranged entries are accompanied by 150 photos and other illustrations, with 300 sidebars drawn from a variety of sources. Approximately one third of the entries provide biographical information about men and women who have made significant contributions to the field. Other categories include case studies, leadership studies, followership, women and gender, personal characteristics of model leaders, leadership styles, and leadership theories. The appendixes following the main body of the work include a six-page select bibliography of books related to leadership, a directory of 250 leadership programs with accompanying mission statements, key foreign policy and war speeches of U.S. presidents, and excerpts from sacred texts illuminating "the role of leaders and leadership concepts." Bottom Line Because of its breadth, ease of navigation, high level of scholarship, clear writing, and practical format, this model encyclopedia should help establish leadership as a normative field of study. Highly recommended. Jack Forman, San Diego Mesa Coll. Lib., CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
