Assault on Rural Poverty: The Case of Ethiopia FROM THE PUBLISHER
Assault on Rural Poverty analyzes the causes of rural poverty and constraints impeding increased agricultural productivity during the last four decades in Ethiopia under three different regimes. It discusses the lessons drawn from the experience in Ethiopia and other poor countries. These provide the basis for recommending a small farmer-led development strategy to alleviate rural poverty in Ethiopia. The keys for successful economic growth are perceived as the provision of institutional savings and credit to small-scale farmers and small business owners, the deep involvement of the local community in project planning, implementation, evaluation and sharing of benefits, and the use of development support communication for motivation, information dissemination, and training. Ethnic politics is seen to be destructive of Ethiopian society and a deterrent to sustainable development. Therefore ethnic politics must be replaced by a genuinely democratic and widely acceptable system of governance.
