Benchmark Books presents a way to see the world with this book and others in the "Cultures of the World" series. This book offers an all-encompassing view of the colorful Thai culture. The well-organized format offers descriptive and graphic details of the land and its people. It is evident that extensive research has been done on subjects ranging from the geography and history of the country to its lifestyle, festivals, and foods. Every chapter is broken into several sub-topics for easy reading. Bright photographs including ones of crops, flora, fauna, royalty, common people, and landmarks dot the pages to augment the text. Bonuses at the end of the book consist of regional recipes, a topographical grid map, a full-page map and overview page of the economy, a full-page map and overview page of the culture, and an extensive time line comparing events in Thailand with events in the world. A glossary of Thai words and a resource page for further information are also available. This book and others in the series would re-enforce materials in any geography and history class. 2002 (orig. 1992), Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish,

Gr 5-8-Goodman's revision of the 1990 edition describes the geography, history, government, economy, people, religion, language, arts, and culture of this predominantly Buddhist country. The book is well organized with clearly marked chapters and sidebars with additional information. Appealing full-color photographs vary in size from a full page to a half page, each with detailed captions. There are many cultural details included such as recipes, native dress (including a diagram of how to wear a pakama headpiece), astrology, crafts, festivals, and a quick-facts page in the back. The lively text is easy to use for reports and makes an excellent update for most collections.-Kristina Aaronson, Henniker Community School, NH Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
