FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Susan Schott Karr
This book is part of the series, "AnimalWays," which includes books about other animals. The book looks like one that may get a lot of handling by anyone researching or studying elephants, and it will make a welcome addition to a school or library shelf. The author writes chapters about the elephant's world, ancestors, nature, behavior, special characteristics, and cycle of life, as well as one about man's conservation efforts of the species. She has done a fine job of digging up an expanse of interesting factual detail. However, the writing style could stand a jump start; most sentences follow a standard subject-verb format, leaving room for little variety in the pacing and cadence of the prose. The photographs alone will make for a lively time. From giant mammoths to baby elephants frolicking, they delight the eye and lend themselves to laughter. Other graphic features, including an introduction to the phyla, classes, and orders within the animal kingdom, drawings of various types of elephant, and a chart depicting the differences between Asian and African elephants add to the breadth of visual detail. To make research efforts easier, the book includes a glossary, index, and list of further resources. 2003, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish,
