Malta is a small group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea, between Europe and North Africa. Although very small in population, less than half a million, it has existed for over 6,000 years. The culture of Malta is rich in tradition due to its having been under the rule of the Phoenicians, then later the Romans and the Arabs. Every village has its own patron saint and celebrations are held in their honor. Christian holidays are celebrated with Maltese influence, such as the tradition on Christmas to give children saucers of water where seeds are sown, to be placed in the nativity. This represents the importance of the harvest. Through the rich use of photographs, maps and historical data, the reader will feel he has walked the streets of these small islands. A local recipe may inspire further investigation of the culture. A "Quick Notes" page in each volume lists important facts and provides students with a handy referral and access to material.
