VOYA
The fine volumes in the Women of Sports series profile eight of the world's best young athletes in their respective sports. Each book begins with a brief history of the sport and its pioneers. Separate chapters focus on individual athletes, describing each one's background and rise to worldclass competition, career highlights, and plans for the future. Track and Field explains events in separate chapters, featuring the world's best in distance running (Sally Barsosio), hurdling (Gail Devers), pole vaulting (Stacy Dragila and Emma George), sprinting (Cathy Freeman, Angela Williams, Inger Miller), and long jumping (Marion Jones). Format and style are consistent across titles in this attractivelydesigned and wellwritten series. Other titles cover figure skating, soccer, tennis, gymnastics, and basketball. Rutledge's contagious enthusiasm for sports history makes these titles highly recommended. Index. Photos. Chronology. School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Covering eight athletes from America and other countries, this book introduces some of the new stars in these events. A brief history of the sport is followed by a two-page tribute to the late Florence Griffith Joyner. Short chapters focus on each woman's career, include a boxed section called "Getting Personal" that lets readers know what she is like off the field, and are packed with full-color photographs. Although other books have been written about Gail Devers, the other athletes are newcomers who may have only been covered in newspapers and magazines. A great resource for any public or school library.-Barb Lawler, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
