My World and Globe
- Book Review,
by Ira Wolfman

Book Description
The world has changed since 1991. There are even ten more countries, from East Timor to Palau. But one thing hasn't changed-the need for kids to learn their geography, and to have fun doing it. Introducing the revised edition of My World & Globe, the 558,000-copy bestselling book and kit whose praises were sung by Better Homes & Gardens Guide to Children's Products-helps kids . . . understand everything from animals and oceans to explorers and the equator. Child magazine--comes with a child-friendly geography book, an inflatable globe, and stickers so kids can customize their globe--making the world their own. And The Los Angeles Times [explains] everything from how a map maker puts a round world on a flat page, to why it's night in Los Angeles when it's morning in London.

The package is irresistible, combining a fully illustrated book with an inflatable, custom-designed 18-inch globe printed with basic physical features, with 110 full-color stickers. The book is revised throughout, and redesigned for a contemporary look. The included stickers are now durable vinyl and reusable, so after putting the banana sticker where bananas grow and the I Live Here arrow where it belongs, kids can peel them off and start all over again--or have a friend or sibling give it a try. And the coolest new feature: The new square package includes a cardboard display stand, allowing kids one and all to show off their world.

My World and Globe

FROM OUR EDITORS

The Barnes & Noble Review
Put on your travel gear and get set for a jaunt around the globe! (An inflatable globe, that is.) Created by the author of Climbing Your Family Tree, this awesome geography kit will get any kid revved up to learn about different countries and the earth itself.

Including an 18-inch inflatable globe, 123 color stickers, and a book, Wolfman's geography lesson packs together a world of information that kids will absorb. The author divides his book into nine themed chapters, from "Where Are You?: You Can Be in Many Places at the Same Time" to "Thinking Globally: Get to Know Your World," with each including scientific earth facts -- such as what oceans are and how the earth rotates -- and explanations of geographic terminology. Chapters also feature sidebars of "Sticker Tricks" and other useful trivia, along with back-of-the-book country and language games, and a "Countries of the World" map. But the real treat is the color, inflatable globe (the kit's box is also a stand for the globe) with four sheets of labeling stickers, which can be affixed to the globe to designate the locations of animals, topography, and important sites.

Entertaining to use and loaded with fascinating info, this marvelous hands-on kit will have kids going ga-ga over geography. The globe and stickers make thinking about the world a playful 3D experience, differentiating Wolfman's approach from average (i.e., boring) geography teachings that are often limited to a book. With Paul Meisel's eye-catching artwork keeping the kit cheerful, My World and Globe promises to create a planet full of wannabe globe-trotters. Matt Warner

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D.

Continents, maps, time zones, landmarks, weather and more are covered in this excellent, interactive geography book and globe. Children will find a wealth of information on the world they live in. The text and illustrations blend really well together to provide key facts in a child friendly way. Readers will learn to think about where they live relative to other places in the world. How do the towns, states, and countries we live in fit into the larger picture of planet Earth? How can you use geography to discover information about your world? How do you decipher a map? How is the Earth always changing? Where do the products your family uses come from? Your bicycle may come from Japan, your clothes from China and your pineapple juice from Hawaii. This book will help children think about these questions and why they are important. Where one lives matters a great deal—for example, whether one needs snow boots depends on the climate of your city. Some readers may not realize that children living in other parts of the world never see snow. The wondrous world opens here and sets readers on a journey of discovery. Each chapter contains an inset with "Sticker Tricks." This refers to the 100-plus stickers readers will use to decorate the inflatable globe that comes with this book. The colorful stickers feature animals, landmarks, explorers, city signs, and more. 2003 (orig.1991), Workman Publishing Co., Ages 6 to 10.
